2025 Golfers: Mark Yoder, Steve Stefani, Jim Saranteas, Adam Vos, Bruce Arfken, and Andy Guschwan
The Eldon Carvey Golf Tournament drew many of the same faces as in previous years including previous champs Brother Bruce Arfken and Brother Andy Guschwan. Playing on Saturday, June 21st, at the beautiful Sydney R. Marovitz nine-hole golf course* along Chicago’s magnificent Lake Shore Drive at Irving Park Road, Delta Theta Chapter of Sigma Nu welcomed brothers and friends to vie for top honors. Defending 2024 top golfer Brother Bruce Arfken was the favorite to repeat after he shot a stunning 40 score last year. Brother Guschwan would have none of that.
After a two and one-half hour round per four-some, top golfers were:
Andy Guschwan (Δθ 983) – 43
Bruce Arfken (Δθ 779) – 45
Mark Yoder (Δθ 991) – 50
Remaining scores among the remaining field varied between 52 and a lot. After reigning as 2025 top-golfer, Guschwan was heard saying, “It’s great to be back!” Brothers Steve Stefani (Δθ 1007), Jim Saranteas, and friend of Sigma Nu Adam (Harju) Vos could only collectively express, “Let’s get some pizza. ”
After an hour or so at the course’s 19th hole, the group met more Sigma Nus of Delta Theta, their spouses, and friends at Michael’s Original Pizzeria & Tavern on Broadway for a classic Chicago pizza party.
The group of fourteen strong met and reminisced about Delta Theta, discussed the ongoings of alums and the chapter, and heard about the origin of the golf tournament. Brothers included Dan Moreland (Δθ 1021), Chris Calabro (Δθ 1051), Don Gingold (Δθ 889), and the ageless Al Schmidt (Δθ 740) with notable Knox Alums Melissa (Harju) Vos (’91) with son Parker (Harju) Vos, and Shilpa Bhalero (’97), in the house.
As for the history of the tournament, back in the days of Eldon Carvey (Δθ 781), Delta Theta was competing for the Knox College intramural golf championship. But, due to a poor final nine-holes by Brother Carvey, Delta Theta lost the championship miserably. From that, the Eldon Carvey “Memorial” Golf Tournament was born. Brother Mark Hall (Δθ 783) was given the credit for establishing the annual tournament which Brother Carvey confirmed.
Congratulations again to Brother Andy Guschwan for the top honors this year.
As this year and last, the 2025 Eldon Carvey “Memorial” Golf Tournament is tentatively planned for June 20, 2026, always the third Saturday in June. Mark your calendars.
